Unit and Enrollment Reminder

Unit and Enrollment Reminder for International Extension Students – Fall, Winter, Spring Quarters

  1. Enrollment
Please be flexible in your choice of classes. Enrollment in classes is not guaranteed. Enrollment in UCSB/Open University classes will be finalized in the third week of the quarter.
To ensure that you maintain visa status and achieve your academic goals, you may initially have to attend more classes that you will ultimately enroll in.

  2. Unit Requirement per Quarter
    1. Minimum
In order to maintain the requirements of your F-1 Visa status, you must take a minimum of:
      1. 12 units in undergraduate or combined undergraduate, graduate, and professional-level courses
        or
      2. 8 units in graduate courses
For detailed information, please see: F-1 Visa Information
    2. Maximum
Generally, we advise not to take more than a maximum of:
      1. 16 units in undergraduate or combined undergraduate, graduate, and professional-level courses
        or
      2. 12 units in graduate courses
    3. As UCSB terms are quarters (3 months) and not semesters (6 months), the work load for students can be quite high. In order to perform well in class and receive good grades, we generally do not recommend to take more than 16 units per quarter (for undergraduate courses) and 12 units for graduate courses.
  3. Academic Standards
    1. For Academic Studies (UCSB/Open University Courses)
You must maintain an overall Grade Point Average (GPA) of 2.7 (B-) or higher and may not receive more than one grade of B- or lower in graduate classes.
If you do not maintain these standards, you will be subject to Academic Probation or Disqualification.
    2. For Professional Studies (UCSB Extension Courses)
You may not receive more than two No Credit (NC) grades.
If you do not maintain this standard, you will be subject to Academic Probation or Disqualification.
